What is GIS?

And how can educators use it in learning?

All natural events and human interactions involve Geography!

 

Rooted in the science of geography, a Geographic Information System (GIS) is a framework used to gather, manage, report on, share and analyze data. It can integrate different types of data and can organize data into visual layers that use maps and 3D (3-Dimensional) models. GIS, used with data visualization and analytics, presents new and different ways to make sense of data, often providing a view of patterns that might otherwise go undetected. That can lead to predictive analytics and better decision-making for leaders.  

 

Data obtained from GIS systems can help to

  • Identify problems

  • Monitor changes

  • Manage and respond to events

  • Predict events

  • Manage priorities

  • Understand trends

 

Some types of Data that GIS can collect and analyze:

  • Environmental change

  • Disease data

  • Education data

  • Demographic data

  • Social trends
